June 2007 -  Backpack to Cottonwood Lakes

The first weekend of June we made the trek up the infamous Horseshoe Meadow Road (at night) - a drive that you either love or hate depending on your level of vertigo. I found an empty area of the wooded trail head parking lot and killed the engine of the truck.

It was 11:30pm, cold, quiet, and a beautiful clear summer night. Stars everywhere. Those first breaths of chilly mountain air are one life's simple pleasures.   We got our head lamps and started to re-arranged the back of the truck for some sleep before the next mornings 5 mile push up to the lakes.

Round 1:30 AM we awoke to the bumbling of our friends Dick and Chuck arriving from the lowlands. They eventually got settled in under the moonlit night a few parking spots over.

The next morning the four of us caught up over breakfast and coffee while engaging in the traditional task of packing and repacking all our stuff  "just so" into our packs.  The excitement of starting a new trip was thick - its a great feeling.

Elevation info:  The parking lot is around 10,000ft. The lowest of the 5 lakes is at 11,000 ft.
