December 2007 | January 2008  -  Holiday Delirium & New Year Mania

Ugh - it's already halfway through February and I'm just getting the content posted for the last two months.   The New Year steam-rolls ahead regardless - and one day WHAM - it's February!

BOOK REVIEWS! Thanks to everyone who has sent in their reviews. Use the link on the left to read them and keep sending them in.  I enjoyed seeing what everyone is reading these days!  Even the shortest reviews are fun to share - so I encourage more of your thoughts.

December 2007
Well, it wouldn't be Christmas with out some good old Christmas classics:

(I'm Dreaming of a ) White Trash Christmas

The Chipmunk Song

These are hilarious parities that need to be watched a few times to catch all the subtle humor.  The guys over at Tooned in Inc. (Seattle WA) are really creative.

Virginia's Company Christmas Party - The Four Seasons Beverly Hills

Time to dust off the fancy threads and head to Beverly Hills for the annual Shamrock Christmas Extravaganza.   We had  hors d'œuvres,  prime rib that was excellent and of course,  Virginia loved the multiple desserts that were served.

Ms. Billett and her Math Blog

No fuzzy math here, boys and girls.  My friend Ms. Billett gives her 6th grade students extra credit if they read and comment on everyday math problems she encounters.  Prices, curtains, NASA, and foreign currency exchange rates are all the rage on http://msbillettsmath.blogspot.com/  Good going - it's nice to see more of my friends get content on the web.

January 2008
We've been having a 'real' winter this season in Los Angeles - as opposed to last years pathetic single inch of rain.  Cold, clouds, rain and snow mixed with a healthy dose of Southern California sunshine has made for some fantastic views. Here are a few shots of typical scenes when mountain biking on my neighborhood fire roads and trails:

Christmas Wrap Up

The plastic tree has been boxed & garaged, along with my meager selection of ornaments for another 12 months of kicking around.  We had a nice holiday - and many thanks to all who sent such cool stuff this year.  Lots of nice outdoor gear and plenty of handy dandy gift cards.  We did a cool hike soon after and Virginia got to test out her new fancy adjustable-shock-absorbing-lightweight trekking poles.  Nice!

Dinner with Friends

Hey - we really had a nice night up in the very posh neighborhood of Los Feliz - which is sits at the base of the mountainous Griffith Park and is within sight of the famous Griffith Park Observatory.

Our friends Lyz and Phil invited us to this elegant home while house sitting.  We enjoyed a great visit that included cocktails, dinner, fireside chat, and live piano music.

Yet More Home Improvement for 08

Heaps of garage junk sits under back yard tarps, other items tucked here and there, a musical chairs game of 'move this crap out of the way'...  All to make room in the garage for an office and laundry room conversion.  In an effort to have a 'real' floor instead of the cracked and nasty looking concrete, the subflooring is step one - and is well under way.  In the end, I'll have 145 square feet of room for an office, and 60 square feet for washer, dryer and mud sink.

Typically the going is slow since I'm taking this on my self - but I have been making steady progress.  Ugh, sorry no pictures yet,  but I'll have some for next time.

A Year Without Lisa

2007 disappeared so quickly.  It was a year ago that we lost Lisa to her fight with cancer.  I've posted some thoughts and an update over at www.LisaStarrett.com , so I please take some time to visit if you're so inclined.

On that note - we here in LA had a nice yet unexpected Sunday surprise from Laura up in Sacramento.  A few of us got together for a leisurely visit and some lunch over at Zankou Chicken. Wow is that a great chicken place.

Dave took the opportunity announced to much relief (and cheers) that he is officially CANCER FREE!  It took about a year of treatment to put his Lymphoma into remission. A good day to get such good news from a good friend.

We certainly do.

My classic "deer caught in headlights" pose!
